The Big Lap: The Projects in Progress

Impressions of the Big Lap, 2025-2026

8/8/2025

Whilst travelling around Australia in a caravan in 2025, I collected frottages (rubbings) from found surfaces that I encountered along the way with coloured pencil on kozo paper.  These will ultimately be bound into an artist book that archives my literal impressions of the shifting landscapes over the course of this twelve-month odyssey, and (hopefully!) the epic vastness of the Australian continent. These 'en plein air' shots capture the frottage process in action.

    The Big Lap projects

Whilst travelling around Australia in a caravan in 2025, I set myself three portable art projects. The first was a book comprising  collected frottages (rubbings) from found surfaces onto kozo paper.  A second book, with 'spin-off' postcards, would be made up of abstract landscapes using natural flower dyes and the Japanese tataki-zome technique. The third project was a series of postcards created entirely from the packaging and paper waste we generated in the course of our twelve months on the road.
