The Sparrow Made Some Beer
A multi-media project conceived by Jazmina Cininas that offers an autoethnographic exploration of hybrid Australian-Lithuanian cultural identity. The project consists of a solo exhibition of Jazmina's unique lagerphones from used bottle caps and recycled timber that reimagine the quintessential Australian bush-band instruments as Baltic nature motifs. Melbourne-Lithuanian folk ensemble,
The Lost Clog (of which Jazmina is also a member), bring the lagerphones to life through a live performance of archaic
Lithuanian folk songs that form a narrative song cycle. Percussion expert Ben Smart worked with The Lost Clog to
uncover novel possibilities for lagerphonic orchestration. Commissioned video works by filmmaker Mark Bakaitis
augment the exhibition and project, and feature the lagerphones being activated by The Lost Clog in
Australian bushland settings. Presented at Counihan Gallery in association with the
2022 Brunswick Music Festival. Filmmaker Oliver Clifton's documentation of
The Lost Clog performing in the gallery also forms part of the project.
Supported by the Australian Lithuanian Foundation and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
WINNER: 2022 Australian Folk Music Awards Community/Cultural Project of the Year

Padarė Žvirblis Alutį: residency and solo exhibition
Kauno Paveikslų Galerija/Kaunas Picture Gallery, Lithuania.

In March 2024, I travelled to Lithuania to undertake a two-month artist residency at the Kaunas Picture Gallery, at the invitation of the National MK Čiurlionis Art Museum. During this time, I created eight new lagerphones and experimented with creating my first wall-based work from modified beer caps. The caps were supplied by the gallery bar, Kultūra, supplemented by caps from my personal stockpile in Australia. At the conclusion of the residency, the new works were exhibited alongside eleven pre-existing lagerphones and three video works which I brought with me from Australia, in a solo exhibition, Padarė Žvirblis Alutį (The Sparrow Made Some Beer) at the Kaunas Picture Gallery. The opening night included a short performance of Lithuanian folk songs by me, my husband Jonas, and Kaunas local Sigita, demonstrating the lagerphones in action (pictured left), while The Lost Clog performed at a special closing event. Made possible through the generous financial support of the National MK Čiurlionis Art Museum and the Australian Lithuanian Foundation.
